1972 - Orebro

The grass circles of Orebro, Sweden are among the best-known circles from before 1978. The fact that they appeared in grass detracts from their importance a little, but nonetheless, they offer more evidence of the phenomenon, in a country with few documented cases.

The formation consisted of two concentric rings, which were oval rather than perfectly round. They were found by UFO investigators on April 8 1972, while following up a report of lights in the sky some days earlier.

Clas Svahn of UFO Sweden has supplied some useful information, which Paul Fuller published in 1991. He gives dimensions (see below) and confirmed the directional swirl of the lay and that the grass was not uprooted, just flattened.

He also stated that photographs were taken, one of which was published in the magazine UFO Aktuellt, although we have not seen it and cannot comment on its merits.

Orebro is a town about 100 miles west of Stockholm (see map). However Orebro is also the name of the county, and with no precise location to go by, we cannot be sure exactly where this formation appeared.

Formation details

Below left is a widely reproduced sketch by Fortean investigator Bob Rickard. However we believe it is not entirely accurate. Clas Svahn's dimensions are shown above. Since the entire formation was 14 metres across, and the rings 3 metres and 2 metres wide respectively, then they were rather fatter than Rickard suggests, and the gap between them rather narrower. We have drawn our own impression from the description (below right), which is hopefully closer to the actual layout.
